Chiang Mai is small, friendly and easy; its problem is that visitors try to compress a week of gentle exploring into two rushed days. Your first 48 hours are best spent establishing pace: one morning of temples inside the old city, one afternoon you let drift, and at least one evening that ends in the night market rather than a hotel lobby.
Start inside the moat
The old city's Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh are a perfect first morning — close together, walkable, and shaded enough that even the heat is manageable. Follow the temples with khao soi, the city's beloved noodle curry, and you'll understand the local day instantly.
Give an afternoon to something slower
Doi Suthep temple and the Doi Inthanon mountains reward a half-day, not a whirlwind stop. The classic Chiang Mai compromise: pick one hill day and one slow day, and treat the night bazaar as your reset button rather than your itinerary.
Let dinner be dinner
Chiang Mai's food scene — from street stalls to the famous family-run spots near Tha Phae — is the real highlight. Order a few things, share, and talk to the vendor. The city rewards slowing down more than any itinerary ever will.
