Udaipur is often squeezed into a rushed Rajasthan circuit as a palace photo stop, which is a shame, because it is the one city in the state that rewards a genuinely slow pace. A lakeside table, a boat at sunset and a palace you return to twice will outsing any three-city whirlwind.
Give the City Palace more than an hour
The City Palace is part museum, part palace, part maze — it rewards a proper half-day and, even better, a second visit at golden hour from across the lake. The views over Lake Pichola from its windows are the actual attraction; the rooms are the frame.
Marry the lake, don't just photograph it
A boat ride on Lake Pichola at sunset, with the palace and the old town lighting up on the water, is the single best thing in Udaipur and it costs almost nothing. Do it nearly every evening if you stay three nights — it genuinely gets better, and the light never repeats itself.
Eat with a view and a wallet in mind
The lakeside cafés and rooftop restaurants serve the same food at wildly different prices depending on the terrace. Pick one splurge dinner with a lake view (worth it once) and keep the rest of your eating on the old town's honest street kitchens — the kachoris and thalis near the Jagdish Temple are a fraction of the price and twice the memory.
