Where to base yourself
- Haute VilleThe old upper town of steep lanes, wooden balconies and the Rova views. Choose it for atmosphere, though taxis stop at the bottom of the steepest streets.
- Analakely and Lake AnosyThe city centre around the haughty market halls, the lake and the main boulevards. Best base for restaurants, banks and easy first-day exploring.
- AntsirabeA cooler town about three hours south, known for pousse-pousse carts and craft workshops. A good overnight stop on the road south.
- AndasibeThe rainforest area east of the capital, home to the indri lemurs and a string of reserves. Stay a night or two for guided night walks and dawn calls.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Walk Analakely, the market halls and Lake Anosy, then climb into the Haute Ville for the late-afternoon light over the rooftops.
- Day 2Visit the Rova compound and a city museum in the morning, keeping the hottest hours for lunch and the craft shops.
- Day 3Drive east to Andasibe, stopping at a private reserve for an afternoon walk, then a night walk after dinner.
- Day 4Rise early for the indri calls in the primary forest, then drive back to Tana with time for the evening flight.

Tips before you go
- Draw cash in Tana before heading out; ATMs outside the capital are unreliable or out of service.
- The Rova has had long restoration work, so ask locally about current access before planning around it.
- Carry mosquito repellent and consider malaria precautions for the lowland and rainforest stretches.
- Hire local guides for forest trails and city history; they know working hours, entry rules and where the animals actually are.

- Three days in Tana plus two nights at Andasibe is a solid first trip. Adding Antsirabe and the south turns it into a week.
- How is the road to Andasibe?
- The RN2 east is slow and often potholed, so allow three to four hours each way and more after heavy rain.
- Do we speak French?
- French is widely used alongside Malagasy, and some English is common in hotels and reserves. A few phrases of French help a lot in markets.
