Where to base yourself

- Kreuzberg and NeuköllnCanal-side streets, diverse food and lively evenings around Görlitzer Park. Choose it for character and better restaurant value.
- Charlottenburg and around the zooWest Berlin's grander streets, shopping and the palace, with a calmer feel. A good base if you prefer quiet nights.

- Day 1Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag dome (book ahead) and a walk down Unter den Linden to Museum Island for orientation.
- Day 2The Wall Memorial and East Side Gallery in the morning, then Tempelhofer Feld for an open afternoon of kite-flying or cycling.
- Day 3Choose Museum Island or the Natural History Museum, and keep the evening for a neighbourhood dinner far from the centre.
