Where to base yourself
- GöremeThe main town with cave hotels, the open-air museum and bus links to every valley. Choose it for a first visit with the most options nearby.
- UçhisarThe higher village under the rock citadel, with broad views and quieter nights. Stay here for sunsets and a calmer base above Göreme.
- Avanos and the NorthA pottery town on the Red River with workshops and family-run restaurants. Pick it for craft, food and a slower local rhythm.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Watch the balloons at first light, then walk the Love and Rose valleys in the cool of the morning and keep the afternoon for a pottery workshop in Avanos.
- Day 2Descend into the underground city at Derinkuyu in the morning, then return via the Ihlara valley for a long lunch by the stream.
- Day 3Take a sunrise balloon flight, then spend the day at the Göreme open-air museum and a cave hammam before a final sunset at Uçhisar castle.

Tips before you go
- Book the balloon early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be rescheduled.
- Carry a jacket for sunrise flights; it is cold at altitude even in summer.
- Wear shoes with grip, as valley paths are loose volcanic soil and dusty in heat.
- Bargain politely in the carpet and ceramic shops, and pay in lira where you can.

- Are balloon flights safe and worth it?
- Licensed operators with good safety records make it the signature experience here, but flights are weather-dependent and often cancelled, so keep a spare morning in the itinerary.
- Can we explore without a tour?
- The valleys are walkable on marked paths, but a guide adds context for the churches and underground city. Renting a car works well for the northern sites.
