Where to base yourself
- Central Kampala and NakaseroThe commercial core, with the upper market, banks and restaurants. Convenient for a first night, though busy and loud during the day.
- Kololo and Nakasero hillHotels, embassies and better restaurants on higher ground. A calmer base with views over the city.
- Old Kampala and KasubiThe Gaddafi National Mosque, Kasubi Tombs and craft workshops. Best for a focused cultural morning.
- EntebbeOn the lake near the airport, with beaches, gardens and the wildlife education centre. A calm place for a first or last night.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive, settle in and keep the first evening local: try katogo or luwombo at a neighborhood restaurant.
- Day 2Climb the Gaddafi National Mosque for city views, then the Uganda Museum and an afternoon in the Nakasero market.
- Day 3Visit the Kasubi Tombs and a Makerere gallery, then end the day with drumming and dance at the Ndere Cultural Centre.
- Day 4Head to Entebbe for Lake Victoria, the botanical gardens and the wildlife centre, staying near the airport if you fly out.

Tips before you go
- Leave double the time you think for cross-town trips; traffic slows to a crawl at rush hour.
- Try a rolex at a roadside stand: chapati rolled with eggs, the standard quick breakfast.
- Agree boda-boda fares before setting off and insist on the helmet the rider offers you.
- Carry cash in small notes for markets, minibuses and small eateries on the mainland.
- Ask your hotel to arrange taxis after dark, and check malaria precautions with a travel clinic before arrival.

- Two or three nights covers the city well before you continue to Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Mburo.
- How do I get from the airport?
- Entebbe airport is about an hour from central Kampala outside rush hour, and longer during it. Arrange the transfer with your hotel.
- What is the best time to visit?
- Drier months for both city and parks. In heavy rain, allow extra time on the roads out of the city.
