Where to base yourself
- City centre (Nyarugenge)Offices, banks, the pedestrianized street and the convention centre dome. Central for short stays and evening restaurants.
- NyamiramboKigali's oldest neighborhood, with tailors, cafes and the women's centre walking tour. Choose it for local food and a more lived-in feel.
- Kimironko and KacyiruResidential hills with markets, embassies and a good cluster of restaurants. A comfortable base with plenty of everyday life around.
- GisoziQuieter streets around the genocide memorial, with guesthouses and easy taxi access. Good if you plan to visit the memorial early.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive, settle in and take a slow afternoon at a hilltop coffee shop. Keep the first evening simple and local.
- Day 2Spend the morning at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then leave the afternoon light with an arts stop at Inema.
- Day 3Walk the Nyamirambo lanes with a local guide, browse Kimironko market and end with a Rwandan dinner in Kacyiru.
- Day 4Drive northwest to Lake Kivu at Rubavu for a lakeside day, or hike Mount Kigali if you prefer to stay close.

Tips before you go
- Carry a light jacket for evenings; the city sits at about 1,500 metres and cools after sunset.
- Motos are the fastest way across the hills. Agree the fare first and always take the provided helmet.
- Download an offline map; addresses are often given by landmark rather than street number.
- Keep cash for markets and small cafes, where cards are less common.
- Pack a compact rain shell; showers arrive quickly in the wet months.

- How many days do we need?
- Two or three nights is enough for the city, and it makes a sensible landing point before gorilla trekking from Musanze.
- Is Kigali safe to walk around?
- It is one of the region's more comfortable cities for walking in central areas. Standard care still applies after dark, and taxis are inexpensive.
- Do we need permits for gorilla trekking?
- Yes. Treks run from Musanze and permits are limited, so book well ahead through the park authorities or a local operator.
