Where to base yourself
- Stara LjubljanaThe old town east of the river with narrow lanes, markets and the castle funicular. Choose it for short distances and evening atmosphere.
- Trnovo and KrakovoSouth-bank neighbourhoods with artisan shops, bakeries and a quieter stretch of the Ljubljanica. Stay here for a local feel and river walks.
- Šiška and TaborResidential districts with more space, parks and better value. Pick it if you are travelling as a family and want room to breathe.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Walk the Triple Bridge and market hall, take the funicular to the castle and finish with an evening stroll along the river.
- Day 2Drive or bus to Lake Bled for a boat to the island church, a walk around the shore and an afternoon at the gorge.
- Day 3Visit Postojna cave and Predjama castle on the way to the coast, or spend a slower day in Tivoli park and the city museums.

Tips before you go
- Buy the Ljubljana Card for the funicular, buses and museum entries on one pass.
- Book Bled's boat and parking in advance on summer weekends.
- Tap water is excellent everywhere; refill rather than buying bottles.
- Sunday markets are smaller, so go on Saturday for the full stalls.
Common questions
- Can we do it without a car?
- Yes. Trains and buses reach Bled, Postojna and the coast, and the capital itself is best on foot. A car only helps for scattered alpine villages.
- How many days are enough?
- Two days for the city plus two for Bled and the caves is a strong first trip. One full day covers the old town if you are passing through.
