Where to base yourself
- Victoria and Mont FleuriThe capital strip with the market, botanical gardens and craft shops. Central for shops, restaurants and the airport run.
- Beau VallonThe most developed beach on the northwest, with hotels, restaurants and gentle swimming. The easiest choice for a first stay.
- South Mahé (Anse Royale and Takamaka)Quieter bays with smaller guesthouses and shaded swimming. Choose it when peace matters more than convenience.
- West coast (Port Launay and Anse Major)Close to the marine park and trailheads, suited to snorkellers and hikers who are happy to drive.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive, collect the rental car and settle near Beau Vallon. Sunset swim and an early dinner set the right pace.
- Day 2Walk Victoria: the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, the botanical gardens and the Mission Lodge viewpoint, back for an afternoon at the beach.
- Day 3Boat out to the St Anne Marine Park for snorkelling, or hike the coastal trail from Beau Vallon to Anse Major.
- Day 4Drive up to the tea factory and Morne Seychellois viewpoints, then spend the late afternoon on a southern beach.

Tips before you go
- Drive on the left and expect narrow, winding hill roads with blind corners.
- Bring reef shoes; granite, sea urchins and sharp sand make barefoot landings uncomfortable.
- Snorkel with a rash vest, and avoid unfamiliar bays when the current looks strong.
- Book boat trips ahead during the December to Easter period, when day tours fill up.
- Carry cash for small guesthouses and market stalls, though hotels and restaurants take cards.
Common questions
- Is Mahé enough on its own?
- Three or four nights is a good start. Pair it with La Digue or Praslin if you have a week or more, since the ferry and flight links are straightforward.
- How expensive is it?
- Seychelles is a premium destination. Self-catering guesthouses, local takeaway meals and a rental car keep the budget closer to the middle than resort rates suggest.
- Do we need a car?
- For the south and west, yes. Buses serve the east coast but are infrequent, and the best beaches sit at the end of steep hill roads.
