Where to base yourself

- GuelizThe new city, with wider streets, ATMs, pharmacies, cafes and larger hotels. It works well for travelers who want modern comforts and easy taxi rides.
- HivernageLeafy boulevards just south of the medina walls, lined with bigger hotels, pools and gardens. It suits families who want calm evenings without giving up central location.
- PalmeraiePalm groves north of town with resort-style properties and space to breathe. Choose it when pool time matters more than being able to walk to sights.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive, settle into the riad and keep the first evening close to Jemaa el-Fna. A short walk through the square at dusk is enough after travel.
- Day 2Explore the medina on foot: Ben Youssef Madrasa, the dyers' and leather souks, then lunch and a mid-afternoon break before a rooftop dinner.
- Day 3Book Majorelle Garden for the morning, then cross to Bahia Palace. Protect the hottest hours for a hammam or pool, and keep the evening free.
- Day 4Take a full-day trip into the High Atlas to Imlil or the Ourika Valley for mountain walking and a village lunch, returning before dark.

Tips before you go
- Carry small dirham notes for taxis, tips and market purchases; larger bills are awkward for small stalls.
- Agree the fare with petit taxi drivers before getting in, or confirm that the meter will be used.
- Bargain calmly and with a smile; open at roughly a third of the first price and be ready to walk away.
- Keep a midday break for the hottest months, and dress modestly when visiting mosques and residential lanes.
