Maseru is a low-rise capital on the Caledon River, ringed by the Maloti mountains and a country of villages, ponies and sandstone and basalt ridges. It makes a practical base for the fortress plateau of Thaba Bosiu, the craft villages of the western hills, and drives into the high passes.

Where to base yourself
- Maseru city centreBanks, the market and the main hotels within walking distance along the river road. Choose it for arrival ease and day-trip access.
- Thaba BosiuThe flat-topped mesa about an hour east of the city where King Moshoeshoe I built his stronghold, with stays at the foot of the plateau.
- Malealea and the western hillsA valley of stone villages and pony trails, reached by a rough but scenic road. Best for two nights if trekking is the point of the trip.
- The Maloti highlandsHigh passes, dams and ski slopes in the cold months, including the road toward Oxbow and Sani Top. Choose it for drama and a proper 4x4.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive in Maseru, collect supplies and cash, and take an easy afternoon walk along the river before the mountain cold sets in.
- Day 2Drive to Thaba Bosiu, climb to the plateau for the tombs and ramparts, and visit the craft stalls at its base.
- Day 3Continue to Malealea for a half-day pony trek between villages, staying the night in a mountain lodge.
- Day 4Cross the highlands by 4x4 for passes, dams and wide views, then return to Maseru or continue toward the border.

Tips before you go
- Pack warm layers and a windproof jacket; mountain temperatures drop sharply after sunset in every season.
- Draw cash in Maseru, as ATMs become scarce outside the capital and villages run largely on cash.
- Book pony treks ahead through your lodge, since guides and horses are arranged by the village cooperatives.
- Allow extra time on gravel roads, where livestock, minibuses and slow farm vehicles set the pace.

- Do we need a 4x4?
- Paved roads cover the main towns, but Thaba Bosiu side roads, Malealea and the high passes need high clearance, especially after rain or snow.
- Is the altitude a problem?
- Much of the country sits above 1,500 metres and the passes climb past 2,500, so take the first day gently and expect cold nights year-round.
- How do we cross from South Africa?
- Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa, so you enter through one of the border posts. Carry your passport and confirm visa rules for your route.
