- Ville NouvelleThe modern center along Avenue Habib Bourguiba, with cafes, theaters, shops and hotels. The practical base for most first visits.
- Carthage and Sidi Bou SaidNorthern suburbs on the TGM tram line: the ruins, the museum and the blue-and-white village. Quieter and well connected.
- La MarsaThe beach suburb at the end of the tram line, with seafood restaurants and a relaxed seaside evening.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Arrive in the Ville Nouvelle, stroll Avenue Habib Bourguiba and dinner in a courtyard restaurant inside the medina.
- Day 2Enter at Bab Bhar and wander the souks to the Zitouna Mosque, then climb to the Belvedere park for the Fort of Santa Cruz and city views.
- Day 3Take the TGM tram to Carthage for the Antonine Baths and the hilltop museum, continuing to Sidi Bou Said for a café overlooking the sea.
- Day 4Spend the morning in the Bardo Museum for its Roman mosaics, then finish with an afternoon on the sand at La Marsa.

Tips before you go
- Use the TGM tram for Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa; it is cheaper and avoids the parking crush.
- Carry small dinar notes for souks, cafes and taxis, and confirm the fare before getting into a taxi.
- Dress with shoulders and knees covered in the medina, and remove shoes before entering mosques.
- Expect shops and souks to close around midday on Friday for prayers.
- Bargain in the souks with good humor, but expect fixed prices in souvenir shops with printed tags.

- Is the medina easy to navigate?
- It is compact but maze-like. Enter at a main gate, note your exit and consider a guide for the first hour; after that, the souks follow a rough logic.
- Are the ruins worth it with children?
- Carthage is compact and hilly with shade in places, so it works well. Dougga, farther inland, needs an early start and plenty of water.
- What is the best time to go?
- Spring and autumn for sightseeing. July and August are better spent near the coast than walking the ruins at midday.
