- KarakolA small tree-lined town at the eastern end with a wooden mosque, bazaars and access to trailheads and hot springs.
- Bokonbaevo and the south shoreFelt makers, eagle hunters and quieter shores with dramatic backdrops. Choose it for culture over resort comfort.

Tips before you go
- Bring a passport: police checkpoints are common and drivers are regularly asked for documents.
- Roads on the south shore are rougher; allow extra time if you plan a loop.
- Carry small som notes for village shops, yurt stays and toilet stops.
- UV at altitude is strong — pack sunscreen and sunglasses for lake days.

- Most visitors fly into Bishkek and drive three to four hours to the north shore; a driver is the easiest option with luggage.
