Lake Malawi fills most of the country's eastern edge, a warm freshwater lake with clear bays, sandy islands and fishing canoes drawn up on the sand. Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay are the two most-used bases, one quiet and family-oriented, the other livelier, and both sit inside or beside the lake national park.

Where to base yourself
- Cape MaclearThe settlement at the southern end of Lake Malawi National Park, with gentle sand, island views and small lodges. The best first base for families.
- Nkhata BayA steeper northern bay with a social hostel and lodge scene, boats to nearby bays and good snorkelling. Suits travelers who want company.
- Domwe Island and the national parkCamping and simple huts inside the park on an island off the cape, reached by boat. Choose it for quiet, star-filled nights.
- LilongweThe capital and international gateway in the country's centre, useful for arrival and departure nights with banks, shops and reliable flights.
A sample 3-day rhythm
- Day 1Fly into Lilongwe, drive to Cape Maclear and reach the lodge in time for a swim and an early, quiet evening.
- Day 2Kayak or take a boat to the islands for snorkelling, then read, rest and watch the fishing canoes return at dusk.
- Day 3Drive north to Nkhata Bay, swim from the rocks, and take an afternoon boat out to the neighbouring bays.
- Day 4A slow morning by the water, then the return drive to Lilongwe with time for the onward flight.

Tips before you go
- Take cash from Lilongwe; ATMs thin out along the shore and many lodges prefer payment in kwacha.
- Use mosquito repellent and follow local advice on malaria precautions before and during the trip.
- Ask for grilled fish at the lakeside stalls and buy fruit from the village sellers along the road.
- Pack reef shoes, a hat and a light layer for boat mornings, when the breeze on the water feels cool.

- Is the lake safe to swim in?
- Schistosomiasis is present in shallow shoreline water, so ask your lodge about safer swimming spots, avoid standing in still shallows and shower after swimming.
- How do we move between the lakeshore towns?
- Minibuses run along the lakeshore road, but a hired car or driver makes the schedule far easier, especially with children or luggage.
- How many days are enough?
- Five days gives three lake days plus travel time from Lilongwe; a week allows a slower split between two bays.
